i totally understand what you mean
people should try and draw their own art
but bases are a really good place to get started, especially for young artists
when i was younger i remember using mlp bases a lot because i couldn't draw a horse's body but i could draw the hair/everything else just fine
and some people use the base as a reference for a pose or something
like the comments below say, its like crutch. but i think of it more as a helping hand in some cases
