This is an amazing piece of art. I have a constantly recurring and evolving character, and this just became his newest look.

He actually doesn't look that encumbered, seeing as he's essentially just wearing a hauberk and carrying a small shield. The scale half-skirt is something odd, though. If the scales are only secured at their tops to a leather backing, it could actually be pretty flexible, but it does look like a lot of weight on one side.

If I were him, I'd switch the half-skirt to the other side and get a bigger shield, that way my protection is more evenly distributed between my left and right sides, and I still look artistically awesome.

I love this piece so very, very much. He looks like such a dirty little bastard, the kind I'd trust with my life (but nothing else).

I think the reasoning behind having the half-skirt and the shield on the same side was to emphasize protection from a single direction... I guess the idea being that he would try to keep that side facing his enemy as much as possible. In retrospect it's not a very effective armor design for a battlefield, where he'd be likely to get attacked from a flank when it all turns into a scrum, so maybe it's more gladitorial in purpose, meant for one-on-one fights? If he were part of a legion block he might be expected to fight with others protecting the less-armored flank, but that shield is all wrong for formations.

Meh. It's not one of my more well-conceived designs. :D
