I'm a fan of him. ...And I recognize he's not that innocent, or nice at all. I even think that at the start of Portal he didn't care at all about Chell and only went on because he thought he could use her. Then he actually started realizing he started to care a little more later on, mostly only because he was so desperate for approval and someone to talk to. He's proven to be human enough for that. 

He straight up does exactly what GLaDOS does too as a potato: try to win her sympathy. He says bad things about a lot of stuff and then stops himself forcefully to sound less mean spirited. Even at the start of the game he says that line "Oh, just open the door!" and then he adds to himself "That's too agressive..."

He's just clingy and frustrated, and in my opinion is VERY responsible for his actions as an antagonist. He straight up laughs at the sentry turrets being incinerated. This scene gives me a lot to think about. Especially since so many people seem to ignore it. The defective turrets laugh too, but what exactly does this mean? I can perfectly see THEM going mad at the idea of being in control of the facility as well. So, was the guy really as sweet as most people seem to paint him as? Was he really just a victim there? I don't think so! The chassis was fuel, lots of fuel, to the fire. Corrupted codes, influences, the itch, all of that was responsible, but the metaphorical fire was there, very, very present. If you think he's a jerk, I can't blame you at all.
