Just an idea. Instead of unstructured interaction (aka small talk). Try structured interaction, like playing a cooperative game or watching a movie. Doing a project together might also work.

That way the introvert does not enter the overthinking phase (which is what draw the energy).  

And the extrovert does not enter the "what is wrong" phase which happen when they do not receive the expected input.

With structure everyone knows what to do and how to behave in the situation. No worries of being overwhelming or underwhelming. Eventually both get to know each other, so interaction becomes natural.
