The engine is a Pratt & Whitney Wasp, the same engien as used in the C-47 Transport aircraft.

I quickly looked up the Boomerang in Jane's WWII Aircraft and it seems it did pretty well. No wonder with that engine! I've often heard it on the Dak. I must say, there's just something about a radial engine.

Yeah it was the wind rushing across the gun ports that makes the unique whistle.
