Well actually, most of what you saw was just straight-up painting. Not a lot of photoshop special FX there.
it's not really the special effects, it's more of the knowledge of the program itself.
any chance you were using custom brushes or were they the default ones?

I use Hard Round, occasionally lowering the hardness to get a specific effect.
