Hello! I have just one question: In step 3 when you say "pick out shapes" (foliage)you mean like removing the paint from the canvas while it's still wet?

Hi! Sorry, that was not very clear language for describing the process...when I am "picking out the shapes," I am looking at the wash composition and drawing in the right leaf shapes that I think go with that composition--it's important to sort of "listen" to the painting and not be too deterministic or exacting...just see what happens. The wash is dry when doing this, and pencil will easily erase if you don't like what you've drawn. Then I fill in with paint around the pencil outlines-- no removing paint.
