I like to take a lot of pictures in the woods near dusk, mostly of my own dog, and I'd love the zoom for when I catch sight of wildlife.

Wish I had what you're describing haha, or anything with zoom to begin with. 
From what I've been told, the Nikon D90 is supposed to be a really nice allround camera. I think it comes with a decent zoom too. Not sure what the cost is though.
