I've been trying to learn flash, but It's not been going well.(honestly I haven't been able to use flash at all because my computer broke and I lost it with all my other programs and such) But from what I can tell GIMP much simpler and easy way to start.I'll explain,

It's frame by frame(one frame= one layer), so you just draw each step and set the duration. Then go to the filter's tab, Animation- playback, and you can instantly check so see if it's smoothly flowing, that's prob what I like the most about it. But I can't say I color in GIMP often, I actually import the lines done in gimp into photoshop, then neaten the lines up and color there, because it can do multiple layers per frame(so I can make moving or non-moving backgrounds). I know flash can do layers and it seems to be keyframe ran which i've never done for a 2d animation, but as I said, I haven't really had the chance or knowledge to play around too much in it. My guess is GIMP, its good for simple gif's and icons and that kind of stuff, but you could prob do more in flash once you figure it all out.

This animation here is an example of rough lines done in gimp, then colored in photoshop. (the rough lined animation is link above) If you'd like I could stream a how to on gimp sometime~ I may not know everything, but I'm glad to help with I do know! And would love to hear how you did your flash animation! There is always more to learn and try, and that makes this all the more fun!

Hope this helps, and sorry if it's a bit much to read haha >(^__^)< and keep up your amazing work as well Uppa and the rest! Woop~

Oh thank you! I think I will try it. I know how to animate in Flash, but I just don't like the tools very much. But in Flash everything is vectorized, so that is a good thing. And keyframes are very useful and all. And you can reference animations within other animations etc.. I know it's better than gimp but gimp just looks easier! Animations are very time-consuming either way...

As for my flash animation well everything I drew in SAI, then I saved the layers into separate files and imported them to Flash. Like the scene where the Pidove is flying, the BG is its own layer, the body without wings is another layer, the wings in up position is a layer and the wings in down position is another layer. I put the body layer on top of the BG layer, then at frame one I put the wings down. This becomes a keyframe. I copy frame one into frame 3, 5, 7 etc. and wings up into 2, 4, 6 etc. Of course for a smoother animation you would draw more than 2 wing positions.

Or let's say you were doing a cloud moving in the sky, you would put a keyframe at frame 1, then go to frame 30 and move the cloud further. Then you would select the space between frame 1 and 30 and select "Create motion tween" and magically the cloud would be moving between frames 1 and 30. Tween is useful! you can tween position, size, color, opacity etc.

I hope that's useful! Ask me if you ever want help!

BTW, why aren't you part of :iconpmd-explorers: ?
