Well done (though the tank Bludgeon transforms into didn't exist 1942).

What does disabuse someone of [a] notion mean?

Inform them that they're mistaken.

You're absolutely right about the tank. He really should be a Soviet T-34 or perhaps a Panzer III. I should have redesigned him, but I guess I kept him a Type 90 for familiarity, even if it's incongruous.

The narrator is saying that he doesn't want to disabuse Erik's notion of them being near the coast - if they were near the coast, they would find it easier to orientate themselves, and navigate their way home despite losing the dogs; however, the narrator believes they are lost inland, but doesn't want to rob Erik of this one strand of hope he's clinging to.

It was the word disabuse that I was not familiar with - not being a native speaker of English, I've never read it before, and it looked like it meant 'mis-mis-use', i.e. 'not abuse'. But no.

Where are the guys from, anyway? The names (Klaus, Erik) plus the word logbog make it seem reasonable that they're Swedes or Norwegians.

Close - I loosely based them on the Danish Sirius Sledge Patrol who began running reconnaissance missions in Greenland from 1941.
