We used this product called rigid collodian. I've used it in theatre a lot but it basically pulls your skin tight and makes deep set scars 
Then we colored it red/brown with some cake make up :3

THAT IS SO LEGIT. Please show me someday. I'm quite fascinated in theater makeup techniques, though I don't necessarily do theater makeup myself. I just like watching how things are done.
