But Toothless has fire! And he has minute enough control of it that he's used it safely on people several times in the show. LOL
What if they're just playing like Little kids? 
because sometimes lighting things on fire and blowing things up isnt the answer. Same with mauling things with claws and teeth.

Look at hunting for example. it would be a waste of fur to burn it. and plus, toothless can only attack so many targets at once.
