Good question. It depends on your desired result. My background is primarily wood working, but I also have a good knowledge base in paper and archiving/preserving. To go your own way on this and push your creativity I would suggest learning about lignins and what will best cause reactions with them. That will normally give you the best results. Beyond that it's all technique.

Thank you for such a detailed response! I plan on looking into this a lot more, it seems easy enough to begin, but leaves a lot of room for improvement and creativity to follow later. Woodworking is truly great, my uncle primarily does bowl making as a side project to his photography. It's fascinating to see the inner designs of different trees on each piece.
