Much easier/more effective way:
adjust levels
adjust hue/saturation

boom.

desaturating the rose just gets rid of all the great mixtures of colors and turns the shadows black...

Yes, that works as well! :) Often when I do that, though, the gradation of colors becomes pixellated. Since I like having very dark, dramatic shadows in my photomanipulations, the black shadows don't bother me too much. :) Whatever floats your boat, you know! :D
