Letting them has nothing to do with it, I have seen the strongest fall to worlds of the weak. Sometimes words are arrows and no armor can bounce them off.
I tend to use the 8 Mile tactic in that I am brutally honest about myself and show that I know my fault and nothing anyone says about me will change what I already feel about myself. By doing so I take away their ammunition against me and leave them with hollow words that are ineffective to what I already feel.
But you did almost admit to lack emotional understanding, sadly we have emotions as must do and get hurt.
