After The Deluge by Francis Danby www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/d… ? Of course it isn't, butit surely stands in the same tradition. When he Old Masters wanted to paint a nude they had to pretend it was Salome, or Hannah being spied on by the elders, anything with a Biblical gloss was an acceptable excuse for some renaissance or post renaissance cheesecake. Then along came Manet with his Dejeuner sur L'Herbe and brothel salon nudes, closely followed by Picasso and Les Desmoiselles D'Avignon. So what is there left in between the 'life studio' nude and behind the scenes views of the seraglio? Well, the 'naturist' nude is still going strong in photography and there are no rules at all against bringing it to the canvas. I like the chilly but believable flesh tones and the pose of the model. I'm not totally convinced by the sea foam, which more resembles clouds in a blue sky, but this is very fine art all the same and it certainly belongs in our favourites gallery and that of anyone else with a penchant for the tastefully painted nude.
