I really like this. I completely agree about the mesh tool. I freakin' hate that thing. I completely stopped using it. My Illustrator class went over it for like 4 seconds & I was like, "NEXT!!!" 
I'm rather smitten with the tool now but starting out was a huge pain. Almost regret making this my first project but the instructor demanded I top one of my other ones, so hey! Thanks also! 
It's a huge pain in the ass to get used to though. You utilized it well though. I'm too lazy to do it.
