I will be using it

Glad to hear it! It's wise to, I believe... I will no longer be doing projects without using one, out of respect for the artist, and for the project as a whole.

If I am late with the script, I should not be able to demand they stick to the deadline.

I like it holds everyone accountable. And there is no "well, this happened so I'm not paying you." No. Because the contract says they'll be paid, so you'll pay. Unless there is a breach of contract, which is why it is best to iron out the details, first.

So do use it! But be smart about it... make it "easy" on you, reguardless if you'll be the artist or creator. If you want 1 a week, first make sure you're able to script 2 or 3 a week...

I know. I almost got screwed without one. Too bad I still had the intellectual property rights in case the guy tried to sue me. (It almost came to that)

Oh, goodness! I'd be interested to hear more on what happened, if you don't mind sharing.

Well, I helped him (henceforth as guy A) by showing up to conventions, etc, etc. Then he asked me to build him a website, paid me with a shirt mind you, and then had me change the whole design around. After the initial building of the website, I was volunteering at that point.

I ran the entire website AND estore. So when orders started to come in, I asked to be paid. Seems reasonable, right? Well, his email response was "You've made too many mistakes. We'll go with a professional." Which my reply was "Ok, thank you for your business."

So about a week passes and the owner of the hosting that the website is on comes to me and tells me that he's gonna let his entire hosting account to lapse. Please note that this isn't Guy A. Also please note that Guy A and Hosting Guy had a serious falling out.

Well, I, as a friend to both, decided to tell Guy A that he has to move the site and that Hosting Guy is letting the account lapse. Upon telling him through a game (which we both played), Guy A told me that I had until 8am to move the site. I told him I don't have to do anything. Then he tells me that he'll see me in court. My reply was a calm "I await the summons."

And then Guy A rambles through his house waking up his wife, whom he doesn't deserve at all. She jumps on Facebook and then calmly assesses the situation. We, the wife and I, come up with a plan. We execute the plan.

A little while later, I was on the phone with my tech-savvy uncle when I told him about the situation. He then asked me if I signed anything. Which I informed him that it was a verbal agreement. He then explained that I still had intellectual's rights to the site, until they massacred the site with a new/hideous design.

Thank you for sharing that experience. It's a terrible event, but I can see people learning from it, too, so thank you.

It seems to me as though you did nothing wrong, but in fact it seems you handled this in a very mature, professional matter.

No problem. Let it be said that I'm still a man of my word. Guy A was promised a copy of the first chapter of Re-Set free of charge. He will be getting it, although it will go through one of associated friends.
