It Sonic had Vrolik Syndrome, brittle bones, until Robotnik's coup d'eta and miraculously survived. Only to subjected to torturous experiments involving enhancement drugs and Chaos Drives until he escapes 7 years later. Stumbling upon a Freedom Fighter raid in the process that happened to have his childhood friend and crush QUEEN Sally Acorn leading and being the only survivor of.
Don't worry, she's not married or anything, she'd just been unofficially crowned Queen because there is no one else in her family available.

Yup, along with several other Chaos Based powers he's demonstrated. He now has five blue Chaos Drive Cores implanted in his body, 2 in his arms, 2 in his legs, and one in his chest.
They are grafted to his very bones and have stained his flesh with Chaotic Residue (hence the title, Shards in the Bone), the results of these along with the drugs have permanently turned his fur and quills from chestnut brown, to cobalt blue and the flesh near the cores are riddled with spiderweb patterned "stains.
In this world, everyone wears some form of armor, abd use guns that either have a lot of stopping power, armor piercing rounds, or both. Like Sally, who used a S&W 500 a big fucking hand-cannon that can turn a full deck of bike cards into air, literally, as 25 yards. And she loads it with explosive rounds.
