I did a lot of gesture and figure drawing as well as play around with different anime and cartoon styles, for the combined mixture of form (3D shapes) plus 2D aesthetics. It's just as ~leoray suggests; Form can give a solidness and consistency to 2D shape designs.
Just keep up relevant pencil mileage in studies and experiment in different styles and so forth!
