I'm late but in my opinion aerodactyl is based on dimorfodon (one of pterodon family).

Pteranodonts are actually pterodactyloids, not basal pterosaurs like Dimorphodon (sometimes called "Rhamphorynchoids"). I find Aerodactyl being based off of one unlikely at best, as Dimorphodon had an oversized, rounded skull shape and small body, unlike Aerodactyl's large draconian one.

That being said, Aerodactyl actually seems to be based on all of the common inaccuracies displayed in pterosaurs (draconian tails, bat wings, double crests, missing elongated medicarpals, grasping feet, reptilian heads, etc) which makes it look more draconian in origin than pterosaurian.

Pokemon sure has gone a long way with its paleontological accuracy, hasn't it?
Starting with crazy ammonite and eurypterid/horseshoe crab monsters and a cartoon "pterodactyl" to a polar sauropod and a feathered tyrannosaurid!

Not gonna lie, They went so far with the "Pturdodakdul" thing with Aerodactyl that when I first saw the design so many years ago, I thought it was just a regular dragon! But yeah, I'm liking the direction they were going with the fossils... although I guess they decided to skip that in this new gen...

To be fair, Alola is based on Hawaii, which doesn't have a lot of fossils in real life either.
I'm still hoping we'll have an azhdarchid fossil Pokemon sometime in the future though! Although if that happens, Archeops (my all-time favorite Pokemon) will have some stiff competition!

If they make an Azhdarchid pokemon it'd be on my team faster than you could say "Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa"
