I've dealt with both Windows 7 and 8/8.1 and I like both. When it came to choosing one for my PC I went with 7 because more programs are supported and it is reliably stable. 8/8.1 is basically Windows 7 with a more graphics heavy UI and some more features. I will admit that the first time I used 8/8.1 I was completely confused, but after a few days of use I had it figured out. All I can say is that 7 is a good desktop OS and 8/8.1 is more mobile/tablet oriented. And that none will be as stable as XP and none (I hope) will ever be as terribad as Vista. (If I remember correctly somewhere around half the computers in the world are still running Windows XP.)
