Maybe becose there is not only one source of light (never), besides every thing emit light (mostly recaptured light) and for exemple if you look at that pic you don't know what is in fron of her, maybe something mid-shiny that emit a little of outside light and made shadows on her face and dress. Think about it :) World is not that simple as we think after all ;)

Yes, but then wouldn't there be more shade then what is seen?

Not really. Maybe light is reflected by stone and then there is shadding but really, really low. Color of object also make differences in reflection. Colors like yellow, white gives us more light than brown or green :)
