And you're definitely NOT failing! I see a good amount of improvement with the hair in your art, honest to God. And I only really use the bristle brush and Uneven_SR because my other brushes don't seem to work and custom brushes aren't really created, more than they are brushes that are in the program with edited settings. If you know what each setting does, the custom brushes for SAI are useless :/
Oh, and make sure to vary your brush size so all the locks aren't the same size. I'm not saying you didn't here. That's just a mistake I keep making and I feel like that's something that can be easily overlooked when you get really into drawing. It's so easy to forget to change the brush size :S
