They were canon for eight years in the 2003-2011 comics and are now  confirmed for TTG (the new chibi comedy series). The old show itself had its moments between the dark beauty and her beastly beau, too (Nevermore, The Beast Within, Spellbound, Hide & Seek, etc.).
