Yeah, how would you draw a grid if most of the surface needs to remain see through? 
It involves Windex and Q-tips and time. :D

Is the glass too thick to just place a gridded piece of paper behind it?

It's a good idea, one I didn't exactly have.  I thought of gridding the back of the plexiglass, but not that.  The problem with either of those ideas is that there is a thickness between the grid and the painting surface which cause the pixels to not always be the same size I think.  Because of visual perspective.  Might work though, never tried.

man, i didnt even think of that. guess i would still grid it, but somehow grid only what i needed.

Yup.  Lots of things you wouldn't think to be a problem, become one.  That's why I shelved it for a year and a half.
