Im using a 2006 macbook pro, with a pretty bad graphics card.  While I think the simulations are fairly intensive, this one wasnt too crazy, and just shows how weak my laptop is!

i am using a HP Pavilion dv7... i spent 500 dollars on it and it is pretty good. I hear Maya is not as good as blender. i cant judge this. but if you have never used blender you should give it a try.

Nice, I have a setup I want to get, I just need to save up for it.  I briefly tried Blender, but since Maya is the industry standard, and what my college uses, Ive got to stick with that (or 3ds max or the like)

true. though i don't have the ability to get those. nor the money for a good computer setup

Same for me.  Have you looked into Autodesks education pricing?  FREE! for all of their software for students!  And last I checked, you dont actually need to prove youre a student!  try looking that up!

your sure they wont check? because i try not to lie? How well do the default Shader Materials work?

You can check to see if they do, but when I did it, even though i was a student, they didnt ask for an id or school email.  I think they just want more students to use their software so that theyll buy it when they are in the industry, like I will do in a few years.
It should have similar ones to blender, like blinn, lambert, etc.  For any real rendering, youd want to use the built in Mental Ray render engine, and its materials.  and theres plenty of tutorials on it

sounds like the equivelent of blender cycles
