It might be because he's a reptile, you don't see many of those in Sonic. Pretty much mammals for the most part. :I

the only reptiles I see are Espio and Vector
They're the only ones I know of, too.
The Archie comics may have some others, but I never cared too much for the comics, personally. So I can't confirm if there are any.
It'll be nice to have a new reptile in the games. More variety in species.
