Promiscuity is the mother of invention. You could defeat the fuss by changing your mode of representation, though—think about individual systems, rather than the more abstract design level. Surely lots of individual computers from diverse backgrounds have "collaborated"!

That's a good way of approaching it! When it comes to shipping personifications, I've veered sharply toward "literalism" in recent times — though some of my very favorite pairings are ones rooted in storyline elements, compatible personalities and plain old "they would work well together" over any sort of real-world associations (See: SAGE/Multics, Unix/Linux and OS/360/MTS), so I should probably be more flexible in this regard. ^_^
