That dress was one of my references, yes! I used a mixture of reference books, fashion plates from the period, and existing dresses to come up with this timeline. I tried not to copy anything exactly, but if you frequent this blog: omgthatdress.tumblr.com/ some of them may seem familiar 
For most of them I tried to find colors/details/etc that seemed common for the period (for instance, the puffy-looking trim on the 1820s; plaid in the 1850s), but if I couldn't pin down one particular look I would just find a dress I liked and go from there.

I call that the "Regency Belle gown" cause it makes me think of Beauty and the Beast (the yellow and 'swooshes'...Disney has tainted my ways of seeing).
