I know what you mean. Those mash-up costumes drive me crazy. (There were a ton of them in the '93 Three Musketeers, which was yet another reason for me to dislike that movie.)

It's so nice to meet another baroque fangirl! Have you ever read Fashion and Fiction by Aileen Ribeiro? It's an amazingly detailed book about 17th century Stuart fashion- the best one I ever read. It's a must have for an student of this period!

I'll try to find a copy. :) Another cool book is Corsets and Crinolines...I can't find it right now but it's got a bunch of period fashion plates and ads and designs and drawings that are really interesting.

I was wondering: Am I the only one that wants to shoot the people who costumed Pride and Predjudice with Kiera Knightley? Because NOBODY wore their clothes that casually!

Thanks for pointing that book out to me! I hadn't looked at it because I thought it was all 19th century, but it actually has a lot of info in it about stays and paniers. I need to get it now.

I haven't seen the '05 P and P because of the costumes. I am told it actually works well as a movie, but I can't watch it for longer than 5 minutes at a stretch because it has both god-awful costumes AND Kiera Knightley, who really bugs me. The costumes are so bad, even my friends who aren't costume geeks like me recognize they're bad... sheesh!

It actually sucks as a movie, from the perspective of someone who has read the book a billion times. They skip EVERYTHING. The best film version is the one with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. :)

Yeah, I loved the '95 version. The casting was amazing all around, and the costumes were terrific. Kiera Knightley is just so... modern looking. In all the movies I've seen her in, she spends most of her time looking all pouty like she stepped out of a Vogue photo shoot. I'm not quite sure why people think she works so well in period pieces.

It's because of her voice. If I close my eyes I can imagine she's wearing the right clothes. :) And also because Hollywood is really look-ist (duh, it's the biz) and she's very pretty. So they give her the roles she wants.

At least, that's my theory.

Well, there's lots of pretty actresses out there. Sure, she sounds posh, but eh... Maybe she has a great agent.

I need me one of those great agents. But I wouldn't do films with bad costumnes. :)
