I think overhere, most people indeed push efficiency and how much indoor space they can get, with little regard to the outside appearance.
Masonry was supposed to be as good as any artisan's craft, I thought. I've seen some gorgeous masonry in older houses, but hardly any in the newer ones around here. I found it interesting how you can liven up a plain wall with just different placement of the same bricks. But it costs more, and so hardly gets done anymore...
