for me personally i just did a lineart and then fill it in with a flatcolour grey base and then just shade it ;u;
i didnt do it all on one layer, im not quite ready for that yet haha

Shading for me is an experience, I never manage to decide on how to do it 8D;;
I dont think anyone is ready to do it all on one layer the first time
