I think that Tauriel and Kili should have formed a friendship that would inspire Lego to be less of prick and that would be why he could few decades later get along with Gimli. Romance and that melodramatic tragic end were completely unnecesary. Why does everything nowdays have to get sexualized?! 
While many people are incapable to understand more subtle and complicated emotions nowadays, even the most stupid people still understand sex, so you can make a lot of money with it.
