Its actually easy to do.
To make it look translucent, you duplicate the character and layer them over each other, and then take the top layer and the item you want to be translucent; having the item you touch to make it disappear on only the top layer, not the bottom. Then you g into the "Sun" icon and adjust the third one to how transparent you want it to be.
