I'm really not that good of a teacher, sorry- the only tips I can give are study how light affects objects in real life and try to base your shading off of that when you can. Also, never use pure black to shade, unless you're doing a black-and-white piece. It's best to use a dark color that compliments the color of the environment. Other than that, I recommend looking up shading tutorials online, they can help you out a lot more than I can. Good luck!
