I think what many people don't understand is that as long as the commissioner(s) or buyer(s) are happy with the final piece, and has paid, there is nothing to further talk about. If before the work is finished and paid for, the commissioner feels that it is not what they specifically asked for, then the commissioner and the commissioned must review and agree what to do next. I am not blaming those who have bought his work are responsible for not specifically asking for fully original work, but they did say they were happy with the final product. They should also expect a full or partial refund...
