Yep - These inks are messy on purpose, or I would say "spontaneous"... I preferred to go with the flow, trying to give characters life, rather that doing something too technical that would have ended in making things look stiff.
As per inking -- For the most part I prefer inking myself, only in recent years I was inked by others, sometimes for style consistency (like Regeneration One) sometimes because of time constraints.
And about "that rough-edged crayon-like fade-out on Atlas's head" -- it's just the paper texture visible at the end of the marker's strokes... probably the pentel sign pen I was using was starting to dry a bit and that's the result... nothing actually on purpose but I like the effect nonetheless
