I was pretty bad at it too. I read up a few tutorials on shading, but didn't understand them.
Now, I just imagine where the light source is and how the shadows are supposed to turn out.
Sometimes I try to observe from daily life. I'm still improving at this too ... but you should keep practising, cause only by that then you can get better.
Don't be ashamed of being bad at it in the beginning
