Geno is owned by both nintendo and square enix, square enix said this in a massage this year wich means he is a 2nd party so nintendo are able to use him without needing square enix plus they already did that in super mario-kun comics
still, as much as I hate to say it, I don't see geno coming back anytime soon, I want him to return as well

sorry i was evesdropping... when i saw this comment i just screamed xD
they might return with a minor role, but I don't think a major role will happen anytime soon
but at least we will have them back and after this maybe nintendo would be more interested on using them in more games
