Every time I try to customize an icon using MS Paint, a white background is added around the hexagon when I save the changes. How do I prevent this from happening?

Should I be editing the icon in a different program?

I'm pretty sure MSPaint doesn't have transparency. Try using a different application, like Photoshop or PAINT.Net

Good chance you're not saving as a .png file, or don't have transparency enabled. Any file type without transparency automatically makes anything that's transparent white.
