MY only suggestion would be to have small tendril-like things coiled- as if grasping- around the rest of his body, like from the armpit to the lower abdomen on the other side.
It would convey a more all-encompassing feeling, like his whole body is being taken over.

indeed, I was going to do it like you suggested originally, but I already struggled so much with the areas where I did do it that way and decided that "less is more" (so mainly, but not only, for convenience sake)
