I think it all depends on perspective - deception can be part of the mating ritual, each person has to work out what the other is really saying or intending. If you care sufficently about the other party you will have to be inventive enough to get past the deception and break into intamacy that may involve recognition of the deception by both parties and what the motives behind it were.

I know this to be some what true as I am currently in a very complex mating ritual..... which of course does my head in and makes me angry and frustrated... which obviously means I care about the other person.
