That is exactly why I used the phrase "engage fully with the local culture". Many people don't. If you're hanging out a lot with people speaking a certain language, you end up understanding what they're saying. But a lot of people somehow manage to go about and not really immerse themselves in the world around them. XD

I am curious - if somebody spoke only Spanish and not English, what would people's attitudes be towards them in California?

That's fair. I don't get how one can go about that though, it seems a bit of a waste to not assimilate at least a little bit, there's so much going on! Although I guess if I were someone coming to the US it'd be different. For as much as we tote being a melting pot, we really don't have a lot by way of culture... :P

There are a lot of people like that in California. They can get by, to a degree, but people who speak solely English are definitely harsh toward them. Even people who are speaking Spanish who can speak English fluently get flack for it, it's a little absurd.

Some people aren't interested in other cultures at all, going by what I've seen. They find it an inconvenience that things aren't how they're used to them being for them - e.g. same language, same culture, same cuisine, etc.

Perhaps that's what melting pot means? It all goes in and is melted into nondescript liquid?

Yeah, that's what I thought. It's like that in the UK too. If you don't speak English you're stupid; if you speak a foreign language in an English-speaking environment, even if you also speak English well, you're a hateful foreigner that would be better off back in your own country.

Yeah, I don't get that mindset in the least. It seems like that's an ideal time to learn things, why waste an opportunity like that?

Maybe so!

There are definitely some people who think that way. We're not quite so extreme, although that's not to say we don't have people who think that way, but it's hard to have that sort of mindset all the time when so much of the population didn't stem from here in the first place, heh.

"Learn things". That's the way they don't see it. :')

If only the British saw it like that too because, technically... most of them didn't stem from here either.

That's...probably true. :'u

Yeah, well...it's definitely not true of most people here. There are nowhere near so many native americans as for that to be true. :P

I have seen so many people making arguments about foreigners in the States etc though, that shows that they clearly think they have always been American. I even commented back to one of those people on a news article. I find the irony really rich, because people like that will say "Immigrants should be kept out, they ruin the country" but at the same time, will proudly claim that they're "half Irish" or "three-quarters German". :slow:

Yep, that's exactly how it goes. I appreciate Spike in that regard, because he's like "well, I'm half native american, so you can deport the other half of me I guess"
