hey if I was mocking the US it wasn't in a particularly serious way, I just meant that cars are very much part of the national psyche over there ... in some ways I actually quite like that; without it we probably wouldn't have road movies, roadhouses, large parts of elvis, james dean, and loads of other cool things.

also the only reason I 'targeted' the US was because that was where I happened to be; if I had been visiting germany or wherever I would have tried to capture whatever was central to the mentality of that particular country.

I can see why americans might be a bit sensitive about america being the target of current jokes and criticism, I think the trouble is they're just not used to it, whereas many other countries are. take the english, for example, and their perception in the US. alternatively, I'm south african, so believe me I'm used to hearing people sing "never met a nice south african" [from monty python I think?] and sundry other jokes
