I really hate that attitude... she has a very clear understanding of the gap between power levels, yet he pulls the "you're not even gonna try" bullshit. could have just as easily said "this isn't about winning or losing, this is training." it's less defeatist (heheh) and more encouraging, no matter how grouchily it's said.
Mewtwo's being kind. They are against legendary who can create shadow pokemon. Mewtwo himself had been 'defeated' once. The same legendary originally wanted to use Jen for her evil plan. Yet, Jen insisted to come anyway.

I actually prefer that method of teaching when dealing with the grittier topics. It teaches a certain way of thinking rather than just telling somebody what to do.
