I think you really hit the nail on it's head with that last sentence.
You can ultimately make anything in life into a competition, or you can choose not to do. Neither of them are right or wrong, as long as it's a conscious choice and one you're happy with
For me personally, art is just a way to have fun. I'm not the competitive type of person (aside from the aspect of self-improvement) as I feel everything is life is made into a contest already, and art is just a way to wind down for me. I can totally imagine other people doing really great on the competition-thing, though. Some people need that kind of motivation, some people don't ^^
