That's odd... then how come Toriel did not recognize Alphys, and how come Alphys did not know about Toriel's existence?
alphys wasn't there in the war so does the other pals (undyne, papyrus mettaton and sans, etc) except toriel and asgore since they're boss monsters, and boss monsters don't age as long as they doesn't have a child, don't say they have two, chara doesn't count as a monster child of theirs so their death won't affect their (Asgore and Toriel) aging, Asriel's death on the other hand, the reason behind Asgore and Toriel's good health and well-being, Gerson (the turtle guy) was Asgore's best friend and companion, he was there in the war and before it, making Asgore and Toriel and his age being more than a millennia (a thousand years) and that is being confirmed by Catty saying that they were trapped here for a millennium, the main characters (minus Asgore and Toriel) must age like normal humans unlike boss monsters (plus Gerson), so, to answer your question, Toriel locked herself in the ruins long before Alphys was even born.

That all makes sense, but then Toriel wouldn't be able to fire her, now would she?
She just ran away, she didn't quit her place as a queen, she counts as missing, coming back makes her no different, she's still the queen
But she has no reason to come back. Toriel only assumes the title as queen when Asgore is dead (which doesn't seem to be based on the fact that she was a queen to begin with; others have become rulers as well, like Papyrus, Sans, Undyne, Alphys and Mettaton).

I just feel that Toriel's departure was, in a sense, abdication; she gave away her title as queen because of Asgore, and returned as ruler when Asgore was gone. My point was that it seemed like ANYONE could become the ruler, and that Toriel's former position did not seem to matter since just about anyone whom willingly came forth and took over the throne would become the new ruler. Toriel WAS the queen, but only became the queen again once Asgore was gone. Besides, how would they know she was the queen if almost no one knew how 'the queen' looked like?
