This is the plane that inspired my approach for the Space Marine Protean fighters in Nexus Arcana.

www.military.com/daily-news/20…

The Space Marines need high-maneuverability craft, and the classic World War II, and Korean War airframes are excellent for dogfighting, while the sleek "delta" airframe is better suited to interception and surface to orbit high-speed flight.  This is why the PA-03 Shinden was made.  The PA (Protean Aerospace) designation is for defensive fighters intended to fend off invaders, while the PF (Protean Fighter) designation is for variable fighters intended to attack/invade a planet.  Unlike Macross, or Gundam, I do not see how any one variable fighter could fill the various mission requirements of planetary, space, and interplanetary combat.  A fighter like an Alpha would fit the PF designation, while the VF-01 Valkyre would be a PA, the Zeta Gundam would be a PS (Protean Space fighter) whereas the Delta Gundam would be more of a PI (Protean Interceptor).

Hello:
Nice aircraft :) . Thanks for the link.

Maybe some animes like Macross try to get all eggs in one basket so they will not have to design too many new fighters for every new series they make and just to focus in those used by the protagonists and those used by the cannon-fodder UN Spacy pilots... poor guys XD .

I do like how you use known designs from series to give an idea of what to expect from the the forces you are creating (I specially like that you mentioned the Alpha :) ). And surely the crews of those carriers will have a lot of fun when they need to go from one mission specific to the next :D .

Hi ChileTrek,

NO problem.  Glad you like that aircraft.

Macross 7 had a lot of different variable fighter designs (despite having an awful storyline), so I don't think it is a matter of having too many fighters.  I think it is just more the style of Kawamori and Studio Nue.

I thought using known designs might help explain the purpose (in general) of each Protean mecha. :)

Hello:
 It is a great design :) .

But still, they did have tons of other designs from that same era (2040s) that they never used, like the VA-3 Invader type bomber ( www.macross2.net/m3/macrossplu… ). But you are right, it must be the style of them, maybe adding much more would make some younger viewers confussed or something?.

And that works indeed, that is why I was happy to see your analogies with known franchises :) .

Thank you, Chiletrek.

Macross does have a lot of unused designs, and I think that has more to do with Kawamori's desire to make these designs.  He--like me--is passionate about them, so there are probably more VFs than the storyline of Macross can handle in any of the anime. :)

Hello:
And you are welcome :happybounce: .

Well, then maybe that is what game mods can be good for :D . To be able to get more of those designs available for varied gameplay depending who is your adversary. And who knows? If I am bribed enough I might be able to make more of the designs, like the VF-9 Cutlass or the bomber I've mentioned the VA-3 .

I even have an interesting idea for the fabled Supervision Army :D .

Hi Chiletrek,

I look forward to seeing your Supervision Army ideas. :)

Hello:
Maybe I should have send those ideas in a note ^^; . But if you replied to the note already sent, then that buys me time to regather my ideas :D .
