The Gladius was the primary sword of the Roman army. It came from the Gladius Hispaniensis (Spanish Sword) a sword of shortish size which made it excellent for using in close quarters. It came in many patters over the 700 years it was in Roman use eventually it evolved into the Spatha then into the long swords of the Dark Ages. The point of the model is a little 'round' compared to a gladius but..eh...still looks like one to me and 'fits' earthpony, and the model is well made so good work all around.

FWIW: AJ's is like the Mainz pattern gladius (my fave) ...Flutters is kinda like a Pompii pattern one.
